European automakers, specifically major German exporters, are set for a rocky 2020 with new environmental regulations hitting them at home and declining sales in the US and China set to compound the pain. In 2019, German output of vehicles hit a 23-year low. The electric vehicle transition has also managed to catch the German giants off guard, with Tesla mounting an offensive in Europe and even Germany itself. Layoffs are already underway as labor leaders and the government try to hammer out some stimulus relief.
